A Work in Progress

Getting it all together

From the "Grownup Affairs" department

I like to think of myself as a man who’s got his IT shit together, generally speaking, but the reality is that it’s not always true. For a time—I don’t know how long—this website was down. Sorry y’all! Being a new parent and entrepreneur at the same time is hard y’all.

So I’ve been pretty busy, but over the past week I decided I really need to look legit again by having my website up and running. Aaaaand in the process, why not update the look of it once again? What do y’all think? It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot closer to my aesthetic than it was before. It’s amazing what a couple of classy fonts will do to gussy up the place.

Busy busy busy

What’ve I been busy with, you may ask yourself? All kinds of cool stuff!

After the successful release of my very first mobile game, Poker Pick-Up, I decided why not write another one? My second game ever doesn’t have a name yet, otherwise I’d share it, and it’s still in progress so I can’t really say much more about it. What I can say is that it’s another puzzle/arcade game with the same attitude and aesthetic y’all have come to know me for.

What else?

Despite all the atmospheric river type chicanery this beautiful Golden State has endured over the past season, and into the spring now, it’s still spring and therefore time to get shit done in the garden and apiary. So, last week, I did my first bee hive inspection of the 2023 season, and let me tell you, it was wild.

This queen is kind of a sloppy queen. I don’t mean that in a derogatory kind of way; it’s endearing and if I had different beekeeping goals it’d be ideal. Her workers constantly build out comb inside the hive that makes it hard for me to get into the hive and poke around. But, the flip side of that is they are very active and fearless when they’re foraging. It also means they have a stronger instinct to swarm when they run out of room, which can be a good or a bad thing. Last year, it was a very bad thing, as it caused my girls to need a split just a few days before cold weather and storms blew through town. The rain and the cold weather obliterated the split, leaving the same queen to reign over a combined, diminished hive.

So this year, I’ve been so far delighted that they’ve stayed the course and are already being productive. Can’t ask for more than that from my bees.

Fatherhood update

My son continues to amaze me with how fast he’s growing. Already he’s tall enough he looks more like a toddler than a baby, he’s getting very close to walking, and he speaks a few words between the various languages my wife and I speak. Maybe he’ll start forming actual sentences later than other kids, but we’re determined that he’ll at least be fluent in English and Chinese.

Amid all the horror stories and the “you’ll never have free time” and the “you’re gonna be exhausted all the time”, it still bothers me that not enough people—especially men—were willing to share how utterly magical fatherhood is. I was prepared for the absolute worst and I still wanted to become a dad, and then since I became one the magical moments have far outnumbered the unpleasant ones, and most of the unpleasant ones weren’t nearly as bad (so far) as I’d been led to believe.

Friends, if you’re thinking of becoming a dad, go for it. If you’ve got a partner you want to create not just a life but a family with, I say do it. Kids are great.
